Dear Editor of jewish Religious Book,

After spending some time reading your blog, I’ve been inspired to write to you about a novel that I truly believe you would love. In all the time I’ve been working at St. Martin’s Press, I have never seen readers respond to a book the way they do to SARAH’S KEY by Tatiana de Rosnay. After reading SARAH’S KEY, people call and email me to tell me that they wished the book would never end, that they’ll never forget the story, that they need another copy to give to their neighbor/sister/mother/daughter/friend, etc. In short, everyone who reads this book falls in love.

Written by best-selling French author Tatiana de Rosnay, this novel is based on the true events that took place in Paris & France during WWII. If you are not familiar with the V’el d’Hiv, then after reading this novel, you will wonder—as I do—why we do not teach about it in our classrooms. The novel follows the stories of two people affected by the events of the V’el d’Hiv—the first, an American journalist in modern-day France assigned to write an article on the anniversary of the V’el d’Hiv and the second, a young girl named Sarah who lived through those dark days.

From the first pages, this book sucks the reader in and delivers one of the most beautiful, heart-wrenching and hauntingly beautiful stories I have ever read. And I am not the only one who feels this way—please read the quotes below from Holocaust survivors and scholars, authors and book club members.

I would simply love to share a copy of this book with you. Please send me your address if you’re interested and I will put one in the mail right away.

    Quotes from Holocaust Survivors:

“The perusal of SARAH’S KEY evoked memories of my own experiences during the war in the Vichy zone of France… Just like Sarah, I was forced to wear a yellow star. This was during my internment in the transit camp of Drancy. Just like Sarah’s parents, I was deported from Drancy. Unlike her parents, I escaped from the train before it reached Auschwitz. Just like Sarah, I often walked through the Rue de Saintonge in Paris. Interestingly, my aunt lived on that very street at number 62… It is a page-turning read.”

-Leo Bretholz., author of Leap into Darkness. Co-authored with Michael Olesker.

“A journey of exploration into two separate worlds… universal lessons about our shared humanity… Well-written, informative, and exciting, this book deserves wide readership.”

-Nechama Tec, author of Defiance, soon to be major motion picture

    Quotes from Authors:

“Sophie’s Choice, it’s a book that impresses itself upon one’s heart and soul forever.”

–Naomi Ragen, author of The Saturday Wife

“A remarkable novel written with eloquence and empathy.”

-Paula Fox, author of Borrowed Finery

“Just when you thought you might have read about every horror of the Holocaust, a book will come along and shine a fierce light upon yet another haunting wrong. SARAH’S KEY is such a novel. In remarkably unsparing, unsentimental prose, Tatiana De Rosnay exposes a little-known crime committed against thousands of French Jews and their children, yet focuses her story through a lens so personal and intimate, it will make you cry–and remember.”

-Jenna Blum, author of Those Who Save Us

    Trade Publications:

“Masterly and compelling, it is not something that readers will quickly forget. Highly recommended.” -Starred Library Journal

“So riveting… so absorbing, that the book is hard to put down.”

    -Starred Publishers Weekly (July)

    Book Group Members:

“Just as gripping as The Diary of Anne Frank and Schindler’s List.” -Ginny Thompson

“Sarah’s Key is the most compelling, gripping novel I’ve read in a long time. Loved everything about it.” -Audrey Raclaw

“An incredible story, beautifully written. Could not put it down.” -Georgia Kelly

“I will remember this story…..I enjoyed the characters and learned something about this period that was not a popular tale.” -Barb Toslosky

“Wonderfully written. Kept me on the edge of my seat every moment. An emotional journey. One of my favorite novels. Up there with the best.” -Charlotte Hanebuth
